- Borrow and Lend Money From Friends and Family With Virgin Money
Virgin enters the business of peer-to-peer lending - With friends like these … Tom Hodgkinson on the politics of the people behind Facebook | Technology | The Guardian
"So by his own admission, Thiel is trying to destroy the real world, which he also calls "nature", and install a virtual world in its place, and it is in this context that we must view the rise of Facebook. Facebook is a deliberate experiment in global manipulation, and Thiel is a bright young thing in the neoconservative pantheon, with a penchant for far-out techno-utopian fantasies. Not someone I want to help get any richer."
“Girard is a regular at Thiel’s intellectual soirees. What you don’t hear about in Thiel’s philosophy, by the way, are old-fashioned real-world concepts such as art, beauty, love, pleasure and truth.” – this is not fairely representing Rene Girard, what he is heralding is that love and truth is the only fundament that we can sustainably build our civilisation upon. I know in the above fragment they don’t write about Girard directly – but they do associate him with something completely opposite to what he writes.
What would you suggest to read of Girard?
By now I have only finished: http://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Conversion-Dialogues-Origins-Culture/dp/0567032523/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225790635&sr=8-5 It is a kind of summary of his previous works – so it might be a good start. All I can say is that I am really impressed.
I’ll add it to my to_read list! ;)
